Listen "The Battle of Bannockburn: In The Thick of It with Callum Watson"
Episode Synopsis
This is the second in our trilogy of episodes regarding the great battle of Bannockburn, which happened in June 1314, when the might of England could not defeat the Scottish rebels. This is one of the most famous battles in Scottish history. In our previous episode we spoke of the leaders of the opposing armies - Robert the Bruce and Edward II.You may also remember these kings from the 2018 Netflix film ‘Outlaw King’. Fun fact, both are direct ancestors of Mary Queen of Scots. In this episode we’ll talk of the battle itself. All the fighting. In the melée of it.How many horses were there? Was it easy to kill someone in medieval armour? What were the conditions like underfoot? Now, let’s hear our interview with Callum Watson, author and historian, who actually works at the site of the Battle of Bannockburn and who recently published a book on the topic with Pen & Sword. He also contributed to the Channel 5 documentary ‘Britain’s Lost Battlefields’, where he spoke all things Bannockburn;AND Callum also has worked as a historical advisor on the ‘Outlaw King’ film for Netflix.
