In this episode of Editorial, HW News Managing Editor Sujit Nair discusses how the Modi government, during the Winter Session of Parliament, introduced several Bills with titles using Hindi words written in English letters. Mr. Nair explains how several South Indian states, where Hindi is not widely spoken, may not be able to understand the names of these Bills. He also refers to remarks made by former Home Minister P. Chidambaram, who criticized the Modi government’s move, saying: “Non-Hindi-speaking people cannot identify a Bill or Act with titles that are in Hindi words written in English letters, nor can they pronounce the title of the Bill or Act. Successive governments have reiterated the promise that English will remain an Associate Official Language. I fear that promise is in danger of being broken.”
