The State of Franklin was an unrecognized, short-lived territory in the 1780s formed by settlers in what is now eastern Tennessee who sought to create a new state separate from North Carolina. Despite drafting a constitution and attempting to establish a functioning government, Franklin struggled with internal divisions, financial instability, and lack of federal recognition, ultimately failing to gain admission to the Union.
