Listen "Judge Declares Mistrial In YNW Melly’s Double Murder Trial"

Episode Synopsis

On July 22, 2023, Broward County Judge Bruce E. Thompson declared a mistrial in the double murder trial of rapper Jamell Demons, better known by his stage name YNW Melly. The jury had been deliberating for over 13 hours without reaching a verdict. Demons was facing two first-degree murder charges in the October 2018 killings of fellow rappers Christopher "Juvy" Thomas Jr. and Anthony "Sakchaser" Williams. The prosecution argued that Demons shot and killed Thomas and Williams in a Jeep Compass and then staged the scene to make it look like a drive-by shooting. The defense argued that Demons was innocent and that the real killers were still at large. The mistrial is a setback for prosecutors, but they could still retry Demons. The decision of whether or not to retry him will likely be made within the next 90 days. In the meantime, Demons remains in custody without bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again on August 22, 2023.
