On Monday, August 14, 2023, former President Donald Trump was indicted on 13 criminal counts, including racketeering, in connection with his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. The indictment was handed down by a grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia, and also charged 18 of Trump's allies, including his former lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. The charges stem from Trump's phone call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on January 2, 2021, in which he pressured Raffensperger to "find" enough votes to overturn Joe Biden's victory in the state. Trump also made false claims about the election in Georgia to other state officials, and he encouraged his supporters to march on the state capitol on January 6, 2021. The indictment alleges that Trump and his allies engaged in a "criminal enterprise" to "unlawfully interfere with, influence, and obstruct the lawful administration of the 2020 general election in the State of Georgia." The charges carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Trump has denied any wrongdoing, and he has vowed to fight the charges. His lawyers have said that the indictment is politically motivated and that it will be "dismissed with prejudice." The indictment is the latest legal challenge facing Trump, who is also under investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
