In the very beginning, God gave us an example of rest. He would later add to that example, declaring it the Sabbath Day. He instructed the nation of Israel to keep it holy, rest from work, and remember Who He was and all He had done for them. It was to be a sign, a perpetual covenant, between God and His people. In the Old Testament, the Israelites were required to keep the law. They continually gave offerings and sacrifices to make themselves acceptable to God. These had to be repeated over and over again.
