The health of school-aged children is key to their attendance and success in school. But not all schools have a nurse and it’s rare to have a nurse practitioner in schools unless they have a school-based health center. The Lansingburgh Central School District north of Troy NY appointed pediatric nurse practitioner, Matthew Hickling as its Medical Director, a position usually held by an off-site physician. Host Diana Mason talked with Hickling about his position and its impact on the school children and staff in his district’s schools. Also a member of the board of directors of the New York State Association of School Nurses, Board Member of New York State Association of School Nurses, and a Committee Member of the Brain Injury Association of New York State, Hickling also discusses state and federal support for school health services, including the potential impact of proposed cuts from the US. Department of Education, and his work related to changing responses to child concussions. This interview first aired on April 30, 2025, on HealthCetera in the Catskills on WIOX Radio.
