We can all appreciate the satisfying feeling of being deeply cared for or connecting with another human who can relate to us through shared experience, condition, or situation. For patients of color–especially Black women–seeking help from healthcare professionals can involve issues relating to race and the impact of systemic racism on the physical and mental well-being of themselves and their families. So how can patients of color truly feel cared for if they feel unable to connect–or unseen–by their provider who may not share the same lived experience?
