Episode Synopsis

It's difficult to not like Aidan Bouman or feel ecstatic for him after he led South Dakota's win over South Dakota State... even if you're a Jackrabbit fan.   (Well, the latter is difficult if you wear blue and yellow. We get it. You're a fan.)   Always affable and always gracious with teammates, coaches, fans, and media, the 24-year-old senior has flown through some serious turbulence in his college career. And, at times, he has piloted through treacherous terrain in this, his final frontier. You know the story now. Son of an NFL quarterback, started his career at Iowa State but was buried on the depth chart, transferred to USD, became a legend by spearheading two wins over NDSU and the two most successful seasons in the program's Div. I era, surprised and endeared fans and non-fans by coming back for one more year at age 24. The reason to come back was to chase a national championship after the Coyotes bowed out in the '24 semifinals. But the graduations of a few playmakers and the transferring of Adams and Cotton and other linemen rendered Bouman to, at times, a scuffling boxer, battered and bloodied but still taking swings in that 5-4 start. But he remained poised, optimistic, and committed to developing chemistry with his new teammates and offensive coordinator while avoiding a turnover for five straight games coming into Saturday. And by 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Bouman stood with some of those teammates at the front of the pack of Coyotes singing the USD fight song with the students as they pumped their fists. The affable but composed senior appeared to be unleashing emotions of his turbulent final season as he put plenty of extra juice into every letter in "C-O-Y-O-T-E-S." In this 35-minute interview on Monday, his one day off every week, Bouman peels back a layer beyond his postgame press conference remarks to give insight into: The emotions of beating SDSU How and why USD struggled to get moving early in the seaosn L.J. Phillips — the Superman and the Clark Kent Travis Johansen — what is the Yote coach really like? How things finally clicked with his new offensive linemen and receivers Rare close bond between offense and defense After Bouman, local football legend Kurtiss Riggs drops by Gibs Sports Bar for a beer and his weekly Monday Afternoon quarterback hour.  The 11-time indoor pro football champion, SDSU gameday TV analyst, and Sanford Sports Academy's football director digs into "State vs U:" How and why the Yotes won SDSU quarterback Jack Henry's first start Bouman the USD offense's gradual progress First year coaching performances of Jackson and Johansen How good are both offensive lines? How good is football in the FCS this year? How we should look at the 7-3 Jacks considering everything since Jimmy Rogers left? What message would Kurtiss send to the most disgruntled Jacks fans Riggs will be on the call for SDPB in the South Dakota high school football state championships later in the week. He was also on the call with Happy Hour host John Gaskins for last Friday's state semifinal showdown between No. 2 Lincoln and No. 3 Jefferson. What does he make of the Patriots' win and how do they match up with No. 1 Brandon Valley in a rematch of last year's state final?  The veteran quarterback coach also assesses J.J. McCarthy's play in the Minnesota Vikings' ugly 27-13 loss to Baltimore and Mark Gronowski's body of work after the former Jackrabbit led a late fourth quarter touchdown drive only to watch Oregon kick a field goal to dash the Hawkeyes' CFB Playoff dreams. Before Bouman and Riggs, Gaskins holds a therapy session for SDSU fans angry at the players and coaches for the Jacks' three-game losing streak and Saturday's loss in particular. The bottom line — RELAX. Here's why.
