King Ahab has married a woman, Jezebel, a pagan priestess, who leads him and the nation astray to follow her pagan gods.(Just like God said would happen). Israel has been worshipping these gods against all warnings and explicit commands of God and their promises to serve God alone. They together have brought disaster upon Israel. Ahab is a wicked king that has no desire to serve Israel’s God. Under his rule, Israel has fallen very far from God.
God has raised up a Prophet, Elijah to be His spokesman to Israel to bring them back to Him. With the showdown of the false prophets of Baal on Carmel, God has proved thru Elijah that He alone is God. God answered with fire from heaven. God has withheld rain for 3 ½ years, which was something He said He would do in times of sin against Him. Then Elijah prays and God gives rain, again showing the people that He alone is God and has power over nature. He proves time and again that He is God. He has done that in our lives too. Will we choose to serve and worship God?
