Listen "Grandmother Time with Panya Banjoko"
Episode Synopsis
In this episode, Panya shares how she was at the birth of her granddaughter and how she enacted an African tradition by whispering in her ear. Something she also did for her other grandchildren. With her parents being part of the Windrush Generation, and her grandmothers in Jamaica, she could not build relationships with them. However, she was inspired by observing how her mother interacted with tenderness with her grandchildren. Notably, Panya believes that Grandmothers do things differently from the parent/s and fill the gap while they make a living and provide a home. Panya sees being a grandmother as a privilege - having the opportunity to play a part in her grandchildren’s upbringing and be someone they can confide in and trust.
