Ribbs competed in several NASCAR series from the mid-1980s to the early 2000s. Ribbs also was the first African-American man to have tested a Formula One car testing for the Brabham F1 team in 1986 at the Autódromo do Estoril, Portugal. Later he was become the first African-American to start the Indianapolis 500.
