Listen "036 | Tonye Faloughi-Ekezie on Down Syndrome Awareness and Representation in Children's Literature "
Episode Synopsis
Nigerian author, mother and entrepreneur Tonye Faloughi-Ekezie writes beautiful children’s stories with real purpose.
Her popular 'Ugo and Sim Sim' book series is the first globally to feature a black main character with Down syndrome, and is inspired by her two children, Ugo and Simone. As a baby, her daughter Simone had life threatening heart complications resulting from a late diagnosis of Down syndrome.
Tonye now uses her entrepreneurial drive to not only raise awareness about special needs with her Special Mums Africa podcast, but also to highlight the importance of representation in children's content with the creation of Simone's Oasis, a platform dedicated to black and African children.
Tonye joins Ben Veal on Good Journeys for this purposeful conversation: episode 036 is out now, just for you.
