In these chapters, God instructs Moses to build the bronze altar as a place to offer burnt offerings and peace offerings, and ordains Aaron and his sons as priests. Additionally, God sets regulations for the half-shekel temple tax and the requirement for every Israelite man to give it as an offering to the Lord. While waiting for Moses' return from Mount Sinai, the Israelites build a golden calf as an idol and worship it. When Moses returns and sees what has happened, he becomes angry and breaks the tablets containing the Ten Commandments. However, after pleading with God, Moses is given the opportunity to receive a new set of tablets and resume leading the Israelites.
