In today's episode of Foodnourish deep dives, we're exploring kickboxing, a high-energy combative sport combining boxing and kicks. This drastic form of exercise works the entire body, mobilizing many joints and large muscle groups. Even cardio kickboxing, which doesn't require equipment, offers significant benefits.Beyond the physical, kickboxing is a powerful stress reliever, releasing endorphin, the hormone that makes us feel good, relieves pain and helps reduce depression. You can use it as a relaxation technique by attacking a bag with kicks or punches to defuse stress. Studies also show it can enhance quality of life and improve sleep quality.Physically, it's an integrated body exercise, working the torso, thighs, hands, and feet for a full workout. It significantly improves body posture by constantly engaging torso muscles, which respond well to prolonged intensity. Kickboxing also enhances coordination, reflexes, flexibility, speed, and agility. A 2014 study highlighted improvements in upper-body muscle power and aerobic/anaerobic fitness. It can also serve as a self-defense mechanism.Kickboxing is excellent for cardiovascular health, helping the heart pump blood faster, improving stamina, and aiding blood pressure control. A 2020 study found improved cardiorespiratory endurance and reduced body fat. It contributes to weight loss by burning calories (350 to 450 or more per hour) and building muscle. The American College of Sports Medicine suggests 30 minutes, five days a week for weight loss.Finally, it boosts balance and stability, which can help prevent falls and fractures as we age.
