As quiet as it’s kept, the great state of Mississippi has been responsible for the sound of popular music for generations. R&B divas Dorothy Moore and Brandy Norwood, country music superstars LeAnn Rimes and Faith Hill, soul legends Sam Cooke and Denise LaSalle, and even the hardcore crooning of late g-funk veteran Nate Dogg all find their musical roots in the Magnolia State.

And with good reason. The sign entering Mississippi reads “The Birthplace of American Music,” so it’s no wonder why the state that birthed the foundation of all American genres would also produce many of the world’s most influential talents.
