Hebrews 10:23 Imagine with me that you are a deckhand on a large wooden ship in the middle of the ocean. From your years on the high seas, you know the telltale signs of when a storm is approaching. First, you notice the wind is picking up—battering your face, piercing your clothes, and sending a chill down your spine. Then you notice dark clouds filling the sky, turning it from blue to grey and then to black. You look down to see the ship rocking under your feet, then snap your head up at the disturbingly-close flash of lightning and accompanying crack of thunder. Rain is falling in sheets now, soaking you to the core in seconds. It is impossible to distinguish between the rain and the spray of the sea as the ship tosses violently from side to side. The sight of a gargantuan wave forming before the ship sends a panic coursing through your body as you anticipate first the steep dive into the valley of the wave before its crest crashes over the deck of the ship and washes your feet out from under you. You only snap out of your fear-induced, trance-like paralysis at the sound of the ship's captain shouting over the wind and the waves: "HOLD FAST!" Without thinking, you reach for the nearest part of the ship's rigging and grab on. You summon every ounce of strength you can muster as you wrap your arms and your hands around the rope and cling for dear life… wondering why you ever agreed to take this voyage anyway.
