In this episode we continue discussing the last main relationship in which Christians should practice submission to one another that they would find in the church. After addressing the marriage relationship, then the family relationship, this last section, encompassing vv. 5-9, addresses the work relationship. We set as the proposition which governs this section that Our performance in this world is for an audience of One! In. vv. 5-8 we see 1) OUR DUTY BEFORE OUR SUPERIORS IN THIS WORLD TEACHES US TO HONOR CHRIST. Then, under this we see that a) Even in the worst circumstance (slavery), God expects us to do what is required of us. Then, in v. 6 we see that b) Our position in Christ should eliminate obsequious sycophantism. In v. 7 c) Our obedience must be rendered with the right attitude before the right audience. And, in v. 8, d) Our obedience will be rewarded.
Today, we see in v. 9 that 2) OUR DUTY AS ONES IN AUTHORITY IS TO ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT THERE IS ONE IN AUTHORITY OVER US. We see that a) Those in authority must do good to those under them. Then, b) Those in authority must not use their positions abusively. And finally, c) Those in authority must recognize that they are also under authority.
