Today we begin with the story of Nebuchadnezzar, a story that unfolds in the heart of everyone sooner or later.   Nebuchadnezzar’s heart is brimming with satisfaction over his achievements.  He brags, “Is this not Babylon the great, which I myself have built as a royal residence
by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?”  Yet, in his moment of glory, he teetered on the edge of ruin, pride was tempting him.  God saw the pride lurking in Nebuchadnezzar and had warned him.  He did not listen, and it was not long before divine intervention stripped him of his sovereignty, humbling the once mighty king, causing him to live among the wild animals.
But this story is not just about a king’s fall from grace.  It’s a mirror reflecting our own struggles with pride in a world of eight billion souls.  We may not stand out in such a vast sea of humanity, but pride can still find a place in our hearts, take root, and grow.
Solomon warned, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”  It’s a disease that makes everyone sick except the person that has it.  We are called to a different path, the path of humility.  Humility is a challenging road, but it’s the one that brings us closer to others, closer to a life of genuine connection and community.
