Episode Synopsis
Welcome to the eleventh episode of the second season of my podcast, Empower Your Magical Self. My hope is that it will inspire you to consider your habits, and whether any of them detract from your sovereignty and joy.
Today's episode is a little different, in that I don't have a guest. Today I'm talking about habits, and about how changing mine changed my life.
The concept of "habits" looms so large in my world that I wrote a book about habits - specifically about how to break up with one (or just take a break from one) in 30 days.
It's called Empower Your Magical Self With a One Month Habit Break: A Handbook for Reclaiming Sovereignty in 30 Days, and it's based in my own experiences with ceasing a few decades-long habits that were standing between me and my highest self.
Briefly, prior to 2020, I spent most of my life struggling with depression and anxiety to the point that I was planning an early exit when the pandemic hit. I can't explain precisely what happened, but I refer to it as grace. I knew I wanted to live, but only if my life was entirely different. I wanted to find a way to live in joy, even though I didn't know what that would entail, or how it would look or feel.
Once I took honest inventory of my life, it became apparent to me that my habits would have to change.
"Show me your habits and I'll show you your future." There's a lot of truth in that saying.
I knew my past - it was full of misery, and habits that matched. The two most problematic habits I had were watching news for hours every day and drinking at least one bottle of wine every night.
Please understand that this is not about morals - that was an internalization that I had to fully grok in order to let go of the habits that no longer served me. It was not about judging and bullying myself, it was about honestly assessing what was going on and ditching what no longer served me.
My book Empower Your Magical Self With a One Month Habit Break: A Handbook for Reclaiming Sovereignty in 30 Days is the Project that evolved as a mindful way of jettisoning those habits.
The Project detailed in the book is divided into four themed weeks, and each day offers a prompt or a physical exercise aimed to help you get to the bottom of your habit's origin and shake it loose so that it no longer has power over you.
