Listen "Emily from 2016 USGA US Amateur Oakland Hills outside of Detroit"

Episode Synopsis

I share some shares talk stories from the recent USGA US Amateur at Oakland Hills in Bloomfield Hills near my home town Detroit. My first guests are long time friends who I had not seen for a long time. Art and Jeannie McCafferty, The Publishers of Great Lakes Sports Publication. 30+ years of publishing Michigan Runner and Michigan Golfer. We were standing outside Oakland Hills Club House and had just created a video for their on-line Great Lakes Sports Publications talking golf and running. I credit Art with putting our Emily Detroit Runs on the map. We were all pioneers at the time in our own way. Joining us is long time Michigan Golfer and Michigan Runner Photographer Carter Sherline who reflects on the people and events he has covered over the years and shares some fun stories. We also talk about the rich history of golf in Michigan and at Oakland Hills. Well, we just have plenty of nice things to say to each other and it was fun including the stories from the Emily Detroit Runs in the 70's-80'sNext I talked with Mark Passey, USGA Scoreboard Calligrapher who shares some stories about the handwritten score boards and the effort made to continue to use them at USGA events. I love the hand written score boards-Traditionalist!Australian Curtis Luck, 2016 US Amateur Champion is a guest from the media center where he had an extended conversation with us. I also caught up with his mother Jody and his father Stewart Luck, integral part of his story from being a junior golfer to now US Amateur Champion. Brad Dalke, US Amateur runner-up to Curtis shares his feelings about his week at the US Amateur and his heading back to college play at Oklahoma with a lot of confidence. As I was walking out of past a hospitality tent I talked with 14 year old Michael Gates and his fellow caddies Orza Robertson II, Ashish Purania, Aidan Parrott. They are caddies under Caddie Master Jim Roechefski at Oakland Hills. I knew before I even talked with Michael he and the rest of the crew had experienced a week they will never forget. They had a spring in their step, smiling and still working hard cleaning up and you'll hear the enthusiasm in their voices. Fun chatting with them. The Emily T Gail Show espnhawaii.com is also available at Emily T Gail on Face book and as a free podcast on iTunes. For information contact Emily at 808 896-6780.
