Episode Synopsis

Welcome to another episode of ElecSoul, where we celebrate the legends of Black electronic dance music. Today, we honour the "Godfather of House Music," Frankie Knuckles, on what would have been his 70th birthday. Through his music, collaborations, and legacy, Frankie transformed the dance music scene and gave birth to house music as we know it. Over the next 60 minutes, we’ll take a journey through his life, his artistry, and his enduring influence, playing iconic tracks along the way.

Frankie Knuckles was born Francis Nicholls on January 18, 1955, in the Bronx, New York. Growing up in the 1970s, he was inspired by the emerging disco and soul scenes. Frankie began his career as a DJ alongside his lifelong friend, Larry Levan, at the legendary Continental Baths in New York City. The pair’s seamless blending of disco, funk, soul, and European electronic records laid the foundation for what would later evolve into house music.
