The Current
By Michael Williams
From this height, on dragonbackAloft in a swift sirocco of wingsThe river unfolds itself like a shy godIntuited by sunlightIn a spindrift of reeds,Flowing to one horizonAnd one only, as the proverbs say.
And yet, in a slow descendingTo the languor and stink of marshlandsThe river complicates,Its gray and linear flowBecomes a tortuous currentEmerging, baffled by lightInto a branching country.
Fly lower still, the ruffle of wingsDisturbing the water now,And see the river bristleWith strider and minnow and flyAll things teeming and tending downstreamBegetting and dying and always devouringAs the current descends toward nothing.Floating down to die.
But there in the midst of the currentIn the possible flow of waters,The backflow, obstruction of towheadsPools of hope behind rocks,The great complexity is a promiseThat what might be the meaningThe design we had always expectedArises, then rides downstream.
