Listen "Karla McLaren, M.Ed.: Self-awareness, emotional fluency, and empathy in a workplace | Doing Well #6"
Episode Synopsis
Most individuals tend to distract themselves due to the notion that being vulnerable is associated with weakness. Every single day individuals deal with different emotions related to their workplace. In contrast, it is important to identify our emotions to understand ourselves. Only some people are aware of the importance of self-awareness.
On this new episode of Doing Well: Wellbeing Science Insights Podcast, Karla McLaren, is an award-winning author, social science researcher, pioneering educator, founder and CEO of Emotion Dynamics LLC and EmpathyAcademy.org. will be joining our host, Lu Ngo. Motivated by her own traumatic abuse experienced as a young child, Karla conveys an emotional, honest, and empathetic view of self-awareness through understanding emotion and humanity in a social science field. Karla has researched, discussed, consulted, and written an award-winning book on emotion regulation. Self-awareness is primarily an emotional skill where emotion is not separated from logic. It is the basis of how an individual functions as a person. Everything an individual does and believes is based on decision-making and is impacted by emotion. How do individuals understand and be aware of their own emotions when people surrounding them tend to do the opposite?
The conversation starts by getting to know Karla through his favorite book. Karla also shares her history as a survivor with the listeners and all the other journeys that led her to who she is now. Going to the heart of the discussion, the audience learns how self-awareness affects emotion and applies healthy empathy in the workplace.
