Episode Synopsis "Community Partners testimonial: NCSU SHPE"

Listen in to one of our Community Partners at Conn Magnet Elementary School of Entrepreneurial Design, the North Carolina State University Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. "One of SHPE's five pillars, around which all of our programming is based, is Community Outreach. We believe this is a fundamental component of our execution of SHPE's mission.  The mission of SHPE is to change lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential in STEM. As a club, we recognize that this starts young. It is crucial for young students to feel as though the engineering design cycle is something that is approachable and applicable to their daily lives, and it is even more crucial for minority students to see others who look like them in the engineering field. This type of outreach promotes the idea that students of all backgrounds and life circumstances are capable of belonging in a STEM field.  The connection with Conn Elementary provided a unique opportunity for SHPE members to engage directly with a group of local students and feel the impact of that pillar firsthand. It is truly inspiring to see how Conn has already fostered in these young minds a sense of creativity and curiosity for the world around them. We hope that our collaboration allows at least one student to feel as though they are worthy and capable of more than what their background or upbringing could provide them. I believe that I can speak on behalf of the entire executive board in saying that these are the kinds of experiences I would have loved to have as a child, and it is so encouraging to know that the next generation of engineers will be more confident and equipped thanks to collaborations like this."  ~Andrea Zamudio Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) President
