Sometimes we have to belly up to something that shifts our whole perspective of life.  Everything we have learned is negotiable either because new truth is discovered or because we believed something wrong.  When we hear things that do not match what we think we know, the most mature thing to do is to do the hard thing of listening--really listening--and evaluating the merits of the new idea based on what we have always believed.  for me i have to take things to the Bible--not a person or a creed but the the actual book and find out what the Bible teaches.  Courage to you as you journey towards truth.
