Listen "Historical view of WWII"
Episode Synopsis
Among the first western scholars to systematically articulate China's decisive role in the global war against fascism, Professor Hans van de Ven has devoted his academic career to the study of Chinese history and has long advocated for a stronger Asian perspective when interpreting the history of WWII. As China marks the 80th anniversary of its victory in the war of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, we speak with the Cambridge historian about the significance of China's role in that war, and also his fascination with China and his historical perspective. In the second half of our program, we speak with Evan Kail, an American who donated a rare photo album documenting Japanese war crimes.
