Listen "Season 2, Ep 8 - Mortal Kombat (2021)"
Episode Synopsis
Here is the first of three consecutive video game movie episodes for this season! First up, it's the new Mortal Kombat movie. Joining me again for this episode is Mr. Multiverse! The discussion includes comparisons to the older films and the ways in which this new one that came out in January fell short, such as through its characters and how they were handled and portrayed. It even includes a bit of back and forth on unfortunate implications that sometimes happen in filmmaking intentionally or unintentionally. So as Scorpion says, "Get over here!"
3:10 - The moment Mr. Multiverse mentions from the Peter Capaldi interview on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson can be found at the timestamp in this YouTube video.
3:55 - Craig Ferguson and Neil Gaiman talking about Doctor Who here.
5:25 - Check out Delayed Replay's episode about Wonder Woman 1984.
27:10 - For context, Mr. Multiverse lives a few states away from New York.
28:50 - According to this section of Kitana's Wikipedia article, Kitana's original name was Kitsune, which is the Japanese word for Fox. However, the name was changed to Kitana because the former being Japanese was not deemed compatible with "Shang and Shao who were both Chinese in origin." Kitana ended up being a combination of "Kitsune" and "Katana."
30:40 - 31:45 - Spoilers for Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker.
37:30 - Check out Delayed Replay's episode about Jungle Cruise.
46:00 - From this October 15, 2012 interview with John Tobias: "The 'K' in 'Kombat' came about during the trademark process in naming the game. We really liked Mortal Combat as a name, but it couldn’t get past legal. So we changed the 'C' to a 'K,' and the rest is history."
