In this week's episode I talk to Professor Anna Campbell, a specialist in oncology and exercise. This episode will hopefully be an eye opening one for those of you either supporting clients with cancer or perhaps you are living with cancer yourself. Anna is a leading expert and tells us the importance of exercise on the cancer journey. She explains why this exercise is important and why exercise professionals need to be specifically trained in this area. We also talk about how you can work with people who have cancer to make them feel safe and supported and to achieve their outcomes without making goals being the sole focus.With so much ill informed information out there in the world, this is episode to set it all straight so that people with cancer can get the support they truly deserve.About Professor Anna Campbell:Anna Campbell is Professor in Clinical Exercise Science at Edinburgh Napier University. She has worked in the field of exercise oncology since 2001 and has been instrumental in the implementation of evidence-based exercise programmes for people affected by cancer across UK. She has published over 60 peer reviewed research papers and three educational book chapters on the subject of cancer and exercise. As key advisor to Macmillan Cancer Care, she worked on the development of the UK wide community-based Move More programmes. Professor Campbell is Director of CanRehab which she set up in 2007 in response to the lack of training of health and fitness instructors on how to provide safe, effective and individual exercise programmes. She is also chair of the charity CanRehab Trust www. canrehabtrust.org which matches people affected by cancer with cancer exercise qualified instructors and provides remote and face to face exercise programmes. Anna is part of a small international working group of exercise experts “Moving Through Cancer” responsible for updating the evidence-based exercise prescription guidelines for the provision of clinical and community-based exercise programmes for cancer patients and survivors. Finally, Professor Campbell is part of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Cancer Rehabilitation 2030 working group.
