In today's episode I talk to Elaine McNish about physical activity pathways. We cover why we talk about physical activity rather than exercise, behaviour change support and the exercise referral toolkit. We also think about what people are actually looking for in their activity and the importance of offering a variety of activity options to bring people back to physical activity. About Elaine:Elaine McNish is one of the Directors of Move Consulting Ltd., a company that helps organisations better understand physical activity and what it takes to help people move more. At Move Consulting she has worked with a range of organisations including the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, Active Partnerships, Our Parks and Buckinghamshire Public Health Team supporting the development of programmes, training and strategies to increase activity participation in inactive populations. Elaine has worked in the health, sport and fitness field for over 25 years, during which time she has worked in local authority leisure services, public health departments, national governing bodies of sport, the Sports Council for Wales, the Welsh Government and Macmillan Cancer Support and the National Centre for Physical Activity and Health. With over 30 years in the health-related fitness and physical activity fields, Sarah has a wealth of experience and knowledge. She has worked in most roles in the industry from group exercise to personal training but specialised in working with specialist populations. For over 25 years Sarah has trained fitness and health professionals to work with clients with long-term conditions, mental health issues, disabilities, older adults and pre/post-natal women. She has a post-graduate diploma in exercise and health behaviour and extensive training in supporting behaviour change. She has worked with awarding organisations to develop qualifications and training and with accreditation bodies to endorse high-quality non-regulated training. Sarah has been featured in national, local and specialist magazines, newspapers, podcasts and blogs and has guested on BBC Radio Wales. She is the author of five books aimed at fitness professionals and one for the mainstream market. Sarah now hosts the podcast, Creating Active Lives, where she and her guests discuss and promote everyday activity and behaviour change as a key starting point for inactive populations.
