Israel had been enslaved in Egypt for over 400 years. God rescued them through Moses in dramatic fashion — plagues, the Red Sea, freedom they did nothing to earn. But instead of entering the Promised Land immediately, they spent 40 years in the wilderness, a harsh and dry place where they learned daily dependence on God. Now, a new generation stood at the edge of the Promised Land. Moses was about to die. The people were about to enter homes, farms, and stability they didn’t create. And God says, simply and powerfully: Remember. Remember what? Where He had led (and the lessons learned along the way), how He had sustained them, their need to stay dependent on Him in times of blessing, and who deserved the credit for it all.
