Professor Tirthankar Roy teaches South Asian and Global History at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He is the author of Monsoon Economies: India’s History in a Changing Climate, along with several other influential books and articles. His research in economic history addresses three central questions: Is there a long-term pattern in Indian capitalism? Can historical insights help us better understand the workings of modern Indian capitalism? And how have climatic conditions influenced long-run economic change? Professor Roy's research interests include the history and development of South Asia, global history, empires, and environmental history.
Dr. Roy received his early education at school and university in Santiniketan, India, and earned his PhD in 1989 from the Centre for Development Studies, India.
