He is the John Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies and Academic Director of the International Masters for Health Leadership and the International Masters Program for Managers at McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management.

Prof. Henry Mintzberg is the John Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies and Academic Director of the International Masters for Health Leadership and the International Masters Program for Managers at McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management.
Prof. Henry Mintzberg, a prominent figure in management studies, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1980, marking a historic achievement as the first member from a management faculty. He has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including honors from the Academy of Management (1987), the International Academy of Management (1985), and the World Academy of Productivity Sciences (1997). In recognition of his contributions to the field, he has been awarded twenty-one honorary degrees from universities worldwide.
A prolific writer, Dr. Mintzberg focuses on managing organizations, developing managers, and rebalancing societies. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from McGill University in Montreal (1961), followed by work in Operational Research at the Canadian National Railways (1961-1963). He completed his master's and PhD at the MIT Sloan School of Management (1965 and 1968) before settling into his professional home at the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University. He holds the Cleghorn Chair of Management Studies, a position he has maintained half-time since the mid-1980s and has held visiting professorships at INSEAD in France and the London Business School in England.
As a co-founder of the International Masters Program for Managers (impm.org) and the International Masters for Health Leadership (mcgill.ca/imhl), as well as a venture called CoachingOurselves.com, Dr. Mintzberg is dedicated to creating innovative learning experiences for managers drawn from his own professional journey.
His contributions to management have earned him notable recognition, including membership in the Order of Canada and l’Ordre national du Québec, alongside election to the Royal Society of Canada. He is also celebrated for two prize-winning articles in the Harvard Business Review and has been honored with twenty-one honorary degrees from institutions around the globe.
Celebrating his 85th birthday on September 2, 2024, Dr. Mintzberg resides in Montreal, Canada, where he cherishes time spent with his family and his writings.
