Doree Ward, Women's Basketball, BN'68, ED'70
A standout student-athlete in softball, track and field and a member of Drake's first women's basketball team, Doree Ward graduated with a bachelor's degree in education in 1977. In the fall of 1977, she became the first equipment room manager for the newly-built Bell Center at Drake. Starting in 1978, her teaching career has taken her to Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs; Floyd Valley High School in Alton, Iowa; back to Council Bluffs and then Newton High School in Newton, Iowa, in 1987, where she has taught for the last 25 years.
Doree helped start the Newton High School girls volleyball program in the fall of 1987 as an assistant coach and then took on the head coaching job until 1992. She was the eighth grade basketball coach at Newton's middle school from 1987-1997. In 1993, Doree was chosen as one of 40 delegates from the U.S. to go to Russia and Hungary through People to People International for driver and traffic safety education. In 1997 she received her master's degree in education from Drake. She has been President of the Iowa Association of Safety Education twice (1994-95, 2001-02), and continues to be a member of the National Education Association and the Iowa State Education Association.
