Listen "Episode 7 - Celebrations in Your Caregiving Life, with Noah Schlosser"

Episode Synopsis

My guest in this episode is Noah Schlosser, my adult son, who’s lived with Type 1 diabetes since he was a little guy. Noah believes that finding reasons to celebrate things big and small makes you a more positive person, even if parts of your life bring daily challenges. Frankly, as his caregiver, a celebration mindset, whenever possible, has been a Godsend for me, too, both as I’ve supported Noah and as I cared for my mom in her final years.
This episode is lovingly dedicated to our friends in the Type 1 community, but the principles we cover apply across the board to family caregivers and care receivers everywhere.

Takeaways:

Finding reasons to celebrate brings joy to our lives, even on challenging days.
Our family uses a red plate with the words “You Are Special” on it to celebrate all sorts of things. It’s special because we make it special.
Celebration foods are made more special when we they are saved for special occasions.
Reasons to celebrate can include the milestones we typically think of, like birthdays and graduations or “firsts.”
Mini celebrations around accomplishments or effort can also elevate our mood and lighten our days. Consider mini celebrations around completion of difficult tasks or just persevering through challenging days or seasons.
“Just because” is also a valid reason to celebrate. Get creative!
The benefits of finding reasons to celebrate include building confidence around difficult tasks, giving us a breather, bringing people together, encouraging gratitude, and improving our attitudes.
Mini celebrations can include a favorite treat, a change of scenery, attendance at an event, tiny gifts, interjection of music (or dancing!) in our days, time playing a game, or just time connecting with family or friends.
