In this episode, Balak teams up with Balaam to curse the Israelites, Balaam, a Mesopotamian magician, is known as a person who pronounces blessings or curses that take effect (Numbers 22:6). However, the Mighty One thwarts these plans to curse and uses Balaam to bless the Israelites. Although Balak desires a curse, the Mighty One's desire prevails, and the Israelites are blessed. Balaam is initially drawn to the rewards offered by Balak, and tries unsuccessfully to bargain with the Mighty One to do as Balak has requested (Numbers 22:7–21), but the Mighty One ultimately forces him to speak what the Mighty One wants.
