Listen "Dr. Marissa Holst: Maintaining Healthy Relationships With Extended Family Members | All Together #17"
Episode Synopsis
While a nuclear family (parents and children) is typically the most emphasized in most family talks, extended family can actually play a significant role in shaping a person's identity, values, and beliefs too. That’s why maintaining healthy relationships with extended family members is important to provide a proper sense of support and belonging. However, extended family relationships can be challenging to navigate as they can have different perspectives, experiences, and values in a family.
In this episode of All Together, host Dina Sargeant was joined by Dr. Marissa Holst, an assistant professor of Psychology and Human Services at the University of Minnesota-Morris. She received a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, and an M.S./Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from Iowa State University. At UM-Morris, she teaches courses on human development and family studies. Her research focuses primarily on family relationships and well-being. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, watercolor painting, being outdoors, and spending time with her family.
Dr. Holst addressed the challenges of navigating and maintaining relationships within extended families, which can be complicated due to various factors, and mentioned the impact of sandwich generation as one of the challenges. She also emphasized the importance of building healthy relationships with extended family members and offered some best practices to do it, and the importance of setting boundaries within a family, particularly with extended family members.
