Listen "Gaslighting - Conversation with Dr. Melton (pt I)"
Episode Synopsis
Dr. Melton returns and joins us on season 2. Along with Elena from 3B, Aldo and Dr. Melton begin to discuss the concept of purity culture. Although purity culture is not exclusive to the ICOC, it was a major driving force in how the church expressed and extended some of its unofficial policies. Dr. Melton discusses what kind of effect the practice of purity culture had on her and some of the women in the church. Dr. Melton mentions how this was a set up for toxic relationships. Despite there being well intentioned members, Dr. Melton introduces the idea of “bad actors.” The trio also discuss the idea of “gas lighting” and how the church used this practice in the past and how it, although seemingly unintentional, heightened peoples inability to trust their own judgements. When asked about red flags that she noticed, Dr. Melton begins to tell us about why she left the organization.Dr. Melton is a practicing clinical psychologist and professor. She is a founder of Melton Psychology Group, LLC where their mission is to create a healing space for you to transform your life and reclaim your purpose. https://meltonpsych.com/about/drmelton/https://www.instagram.com/melton_psych/Support the showStay updated on Aldo's current and future projects by signing up for his NewsletterOther Podcasts by Aldo B.
