God bless you.Key Scriptures: Psalms 121; Matthew 6:19; 24(“mammon”)The central question is illustrated in verse 1. The pilgrims questions as to where his/her essential help comes from: The hills or somewhere else? What does the psalmist mean by “hills.” The “hills” or “the high places” in the Old Testament refers to Israel's frequent mixing of their worship of Yahweh and pagan practices(called syncretism). It symbolizes the believers' divided trust in the Lord and other forces. This Psalm illustrates this pilgrim’s re-education to put primary trust in “the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth, verse 1.” For us the “hills” can also symbolize, not only false spirituality but also our unbalanced dependence on earthly capabilities and leaving the Lord significantly out of our lives. This imbalance is also described in other passages, like Matthew 6:19, 24; where the original translation “mammon”, is more comprehensive of treasuring more earthly goods and treasures over the heavenly. These mimic the “hills’ depicted in verse one of the Psalm. God desires that we look and invest in Him more often. Psalm 121 describes the Psalmist’s renewal of complete trust in the Lord, no need for “the hills.”(illustration of the African mega-pastor)The dangerous trip back to his/her homes from the temple is the immediate backdrop to the Psalmist renewal attitudes and words. The “hills” here could also mean the dangerous mountains as obstacles for his/her journey, we have sort of double meaning.
