A riptide is a narrow channel in a sandbank where the water rushes strongly out to sea.
And to get out of it you have to do something that feels very unnatural: first let yourself be carried along, and only then swim left or right, back to calmer water and the shore. I think that’s a beautiful image for how we can sometimes deal with life.
