Social Media Precautions: Alert!

Not posting EVERYTHING on social media and being happy is entirely possible… At ZARZA we have always been concerned with our clients’ security, advising them in many areas inherent to Information Technology, where, as today, we share Social Media Precautions that may not be obvious to you.

Taking the above into consideration, we delve into the subject of Social Media Precautions and how to avoid unnecessary risks.

What content is shared on Social Media?

Social media precautions — these being virtual communities where individuals can interact, share their tastes and interests, as well as Multimedia Content (Photographs, Videos, Texts), Personal Information, details to locate us and about our living environment and more — are a crucial subject, and most people do not take seriously the information they are providing.

Social Media can be a double-edged sword; in fact this is what they were created for, since they can be leveraged to share, publicly or “privately”, information useful for our projects and jobs. However, information is power, and in the wrong hands it can lead us to become victims, for example, of the activities that take place on the Deep Web, where profile photographs are used to plan kidnappings and organ sales, taking advantage of those who do not apply discretion measures and/or social media precautions.

ZARZA wants you to learn about Social Media Precautions so that both you and your loved ones maintain the social media precautions necessary to avoid falling into mistakes that have ruined other people’s lives through carelessness or ignorance.

What information is gathered and can be seen on Social Media?

Being a Virtual Community, each individual contributes and receives information about themselves and others, for example:

  • Your identity (First and Last Name)
  • Your age, your date of birth
  • Your email address
  • Your phone number
  • Where you are and where you have gone, the places you usually visit
  • Your ideologies, religion, beliefs, etc.
  • Your workplace
  • Extracurricular activities

And this is just to name a few of the items that people from all latitudes publish daily on the different Social Networks. This becomes a real danger to the integrity of individuals, who forget that on the Internet there are predators, who can only be contained by applying the protocols and precautions on Social Media.

What are ZARZA’s recommendations for using Social Media?

The main recommendation is not to use it the way the majority do, who have a short-term vision and do not budget for the future reality that, ultimately, everything you are doing is feeding a database, which can be accessed now or later by people you would prefer knew nothing about you.

We also recommend, for Social Media Precautions:

  • When opening a Profile on any of the Social Networks, use all the privacy tools it offers you; restrict access to your Profile, Photographs, Data, etc. to only people you fully trust. Sometimes it is better to “come across badly” than to risk your integrity with people you do not know… Or what is worse, to put your family at risk.
  • Be selective with the people you accept as your friends; sometimes it is better to have few contacts than a profile loaded with “virtual people” you do not know, with whom you do not talk, whose way of life you do not know and who can be a potential “spy” of your profile on Social Media. Of course, there are exceptions!
  • Be careful with the groups and communities you join.
  • Do not disclose your future travel plans, outings, vacations, etc.
  • If you wish to share your location, do so in crowded places and ideally when leaving the place, not when arriving. Although the best and safest thing is not to share it on Social Media; remember that criminals are on the lookout for empty houses and kidnappings of vulnerable people — do not tip them off.
  • Be careful with passwords: do not use the same one for all Social Networks and never use it on a computer you do not fully trust.
  • Enable notifications for when someone logs into any of your Social Networks.
  • Report malicious content, spam, photos and videos not suitable for the public domain.

These are just some recommendations that ZARZA gives you so you can use Social Media more safely. However, we emphasize that the less information about your family, your children and yourself is available via the Internet, the safer and further away you will be from those who enjoy taking advantage of it to harm you or your acquaintances.

What can you do to help your contacts with these Social Media Precautions?

It is important that those close to you know about it. Spread this information that ZARZA gladly brings you, and let’s make Social Media a safer and more positive place for our loved ones, where we can safely share our zarza Attitude.
