Internet Domain Seizure

Internet Domain Seizure

The Internet seemed to be a place without major controls in the 90s, and it was then that the vast majority of websites and people ventured into establishing a first contact with the network of networks, generating in turn that behaviors now common in the Deep Web reached the Public Internet and gave way to today’s Domain Seizure. On this occasion our ZARZA Engineers address the subject and provide you with interesting information about it.

Who can carry out Domain Seizure?

The World Wide Web is still a place debating its governance; however, the world’s leading power, the United States of America, has been at the forefront of domain seizure, through its agencies, and sometimes in cooperation with international agencies.

Internet Domain Seizure (Immigration and Customs Enforcement)

They do this in strict adherence to their principle of legality, as a result of the fact that in November 2010 the U.S. Congress empowered the customs control service (Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE), under the Department of Homeland Security, to seize web domains under the same powers that allow it to seize movable and real property allegedly linked to illegal activities.

A situation that has generated a series of conflicting opinions, especially from different countries, which claim that their Sovereignty and that of their citizens is not being respected, specifically because the seizure of the domains is carried out without any kind of prior process that would allow them even to access the right to a defense. An issue that, like some others, does not concern the American authorities in the least.

Can my domain suffer Domain Seizure?

Any domain is exposed to a possible process of this kind, so in general it is advisable to keep a watchful eye on the content hosted within your web address; and place special emphasis on it not offending the United States authorities, nor violating the copyrights of those governed by its laws, who can turn to their representatives to confront you. This apparently makes little difference, or matters little, whether or not you are a U.S. citizen.

Protecting my domain from Domain Seizure

It is possible, and basically it means, for the time being, remaining fully compliant with the legislation in force in the United States, and for this, not promoting violations of the economic interests they defend. This implies that your website is secure, and thus does not participate, unbeknownst to you, in the distribution of malware, of copyrighted files, or even in attacks against the bodies and agencies of the U.S. Government.

It is for the above that, to protect your domain and your brand, we recommend staying advised and protected by the ZARZA Engineers, who know and keep track of the Seizures carried out worldwide.
