1My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the righteous one. 2He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for the sins of the whole world. 3This is how we know that we have come to know him: if we keep his commands. 4Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not keep his commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5But whoever keeps his word truly has God’s love made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him.
