Listen "Wicked"
Episode Synopsis
One of the most fun parts of working on a font is typing out samples. Ender and I have been working from a late-1800s style, which means a lot of things since have utilized that style. The Haunted Mansion, obviously. But also Wicked.
For comparison’s sake, here’s the original logo for the movie, again followed up by mine to inspect the differences more closely.
The real Wicked movie logo uses an old Rubens-style face almost as-is, but with a modified W that has a bottom spike. To my eye, that decision places a lot of weight in a letter where there should be air. The interior rounded counters imply the W is drawn differently from the way the bottom spike implies. I couldn’t also help but notice the abundance of space between letters like K and E.
The font we’re working on obviously has a lot in common with Rubens, but I’m really happy in the way it deviates from it, because I think it makes it more fun. And this is a face that I think deserves more fun.
It addresses almost every issue I have with the Wicked logo, just by virtue of being the font we intended to make. It’s not just a revival. It’s not us “fixing” what Rubens is. But it is our opinion of what this face could be. And I really like how it’s shaping up.
