Listen "Volpi"
Episode Synopsis
I grew up on Volpi. I thought I lost it forever when I moved away from St. Louis, but in that time, it became a national brand and I was able to buy it at grocery stores in Portland. I’ve said this before. They now export to Japan, and I can buy their prosciutto but—unfortunately—not salami. For some reason, I tell this to my girlfriend in an offhand comment when we had first met, I think.
She texts me while at a transfer station on her way home one day.
Wait wait wait! I have a huge surprise for you!
oh ?? ? (???)
She sends me a photo of Volpi fennel salami. I can’t describe the joy I felt knowing not just that she remembered “Volpi,” but that she found this by chance. An incredible gift, really. I tried to find what other stores carried it so I could reliably get it in the future, but they were all fairly far away from my home. I relayed this to my friends Nob and Ayumi.
What I realize now is by saying these things out loud, what can only be described as miracles somehow occur. Because the very next day, a knock on my door. I open it to find Nob, Ayumi, and the kids. They hand me a Volpi salami stick, not knowing my girlfriend just gave me one. “It expires soon, do you think you can eat it in time?” “Easy.” Nob reveals another and hands it to me. And then Daikichi does the same. And Nikki. And Ayumi. Suddenly, I have six of these.
This is not a complaint. I’m not good at gifts and I generally dislike them but it’s hard not to have felt incredibly loved in that moment.
