Listen "iPod"
Episode Synopsis
It’s crazy how Apple completely abandoned the iPod, its entire brand, and its name. It’s probably the strongest name they ever had for anything, maybe surpassing even Mac. In contrast, iPhone is such a boring and generic-sounding name. It was the temp name we all used before it was announced. We all laughed when Steve finally said it. An obvious name.
iPod is a better name for what iPhone is today.
iPhone is much more than a phone, which was only one-third of its original value proposition. The other two thirds were “iPod” and “Internet communicator,” the latter no one quite grasped when he said it, but it has undoubtedly become the most important of the three. But “phone”—even prefixed with an i—says close to nothing. “Internet communicator” remains dorky. The iPod name was sitting right there.
And it continues to sit there, collecting dust.
