Writer and comedian Arthur Smith burst on to the Alternative Comedy circuit of the 1980’s as a comedy MC. Making his debut at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1977 Smith began a lifelong association with the festival which still survives to this day. Teaming up with comedy partner Phil Nice in 1985, Smith made a short series of parody documentaries for Channel 4 television network called Arthur and Phil Go Off. In 2000 Arthur landed his own Radio 2 series The Smith Lectures celebrating his favourite Stand Up comics before providing the voice of BBC1’s Life Of Grime in 2004. I caught up with the certified Grumpy Old Man to talk festivals, Stand Up and recollections on an unparalleled career in British comedy. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr Arthur Smith.
