Listen "#56: Breast Cancer Awareness - Know your breasts"
Episode Synopsis
This month is breast cancer awareness month and sadly, we all know someone touched by breast cancer. Breast cancer occurs in every country in the world and the rate of breast cancer in women has doubled over the past 50 years. A woman born after 1960 and living in the UK has an estimated 1 in 7 lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and 1 woman every 10 minutes here in the UK is diagnosed with breast cancer, making it the most common type of cancer.
Thankfully we’ve seen many advancements in the treatment of breast cancer which has led to much improved survival rates. However, it is still a disease that nobody wants to have to face, so it is crucial that all women understand how to check their breasts and commit to regularly checking them, as well as understanding that seeking fast medical support is essential.
We’re joined by Amy Dave, a Physician Assistant who spent 10 years working in oncology roles and who is herself a two-time cancer survivor. Amy is here to share her story of being diagnosed with two very different cancers and how she supports herself to live a strong, healthy life. We hear from Amy exactly how to check your breasts and she gives so much valuable advice to help you know what to check for, when to check, and how to get the right medical support.
In our conversation we share:
The impact that a cancer diagnosis has on you and your family.
The learnings Amy had as a cancer patient and survivor that changed her approach as a health care provider.
The changes to how Amy has approached her health post-cancer.
The exact way to check your breasts and when you should do this.
The signs to feel and look for to indicate whether you have a change that needs investigating.
Why it is imperative that any changes are referred to your doctor or clinician without hesitation.
What can impact your cancer risk and the importance of building healthy habits.
Getting the right support as you navigate cancer treatment and when you rebuild your strength post-cancer.
