Episode Synopsis
Marcia Mitchell is the founder of The Little Light House, a faith-based mission to assist children with a wide range of developmental disabilities including autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. The program is not only a facility for students, but also serves as a training ground for professionals and volunteers throughout the United States and other countries who are learning to reach out to special needs children in their communities.Marcia and her husband, Phil, gave birth to their daughter, Missy, who was born with a rare condition leaving her legally blind. With no facilities in Tulsa to help Missy, Marcia and her friend Sheryl Pool opened Little Light House in a small building, eventually expanding to a 22,000-square-foot facility. In 2013, the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits named Little Light House Oklahoma’s top nonprofit organization. In her oral history, Marcia talks about the many unusual circumstances, which Marcia calls miracles, that led to The Little Light House serving thousands of special needs children.
