Eric Foner is an American historian whose interests include political history, the history of freedom and the early history of the Republican Party. Foner is also the leading contemporary historian on the Civil-War Reconstruction period. He is only the second person to serve as president of the three major professional organizations: the Organization of American Historians, American Historical Association, and Society of American Historians.
